Sharp 900-Watt 0.9 Cubic Foot Convection Microwave Review

by Rachel Kelly

The Sharp 900-Watt 0.9 Cubic Foot Convection Microwave is one of the best models you can purchase. I spent countless hours reading reviews of numerous microwaves and must say I am very impressed with what this machine has to offer. One of the selling points is the size of the microwave; it can easily fit into a small kitchen because it takes up so little space. Even better is that it can also be placed inside the wall or cabinet as long as a trim kit is purchased with it to ensure it has the proper ventilation. Despite its small appearance, the microwave comes with a 12 ¾-inch turntable that will easily fit a dinner plate, as well as other larger cooking dishes.

Pros:

  • Crisping and Browning Abilities – One of the worst things about cooking in a microwave is the limp and boring food that results. I know I try to avoid cooking in the microwave as much as possible because it makes food seem so lifeless. However, this model comes with crisping and browning abilities, so there is no more worrying about limp, boring food, everything I cook comes out looking like it was cooked in my regular oven.
  •

  • CompuCook – The CompuCook settings are one of the things that allows this microwave to truly stand out from other similar models. These settings allow for the perfect cooking times and settings based on what it is being cooked. For example, CompuRoast uses all three cooking methods to deliver perfectly roasted chicken, while the CompuGrill setting allows users to grill a hamburger inside the microwave.
  •

  • Custom Help – The Custom Help is a nice feature because it offers users help on the various programming features that come with the microwave. For example, with custom help users can get help with using the child lockout feature or even the language/weight setting.
  •

  • Cooking Hints – One thing that I find helpful is when I am cooking anything in the microwave is the hints that are scrolled across the interactive display. The hints will tell users when to turn the meat when trying to defrost, but also when cooking.

Cons:

  • No Sensor to Shut Off Microwave Once It Is Done Cooking – I think the only drawback that this microwave has, especially for its price, is that there is no sensor that allows the microwave to shut off once something is done cooking or reheating based on how much steam the food is giving off. Instead, the only option this microwave has is the preset preheat buttons, which are adequate at best. These work based on the weight of the food and how often do people weigh the food they are reheating?

The Sharp R 820BK is quite similar to the Sharp R 820JS. Both of these 900-watt microwaves offer convection heating, allowing users to replace their convection oven and toaster oven with a microwave that does it all. However, despite the similarities there are also some differences, probably the biggest one being the pre-programmed settings. The Sharp R 820BK uses Compu settings compared to the Sharp R 820JS that uses Auto settings. I personally prefer the Compu settings compared to the Auto settings because they allow more to be done, and you get just a little bit more for your money.

Knowing the differences between the Sharp R 820BK and the 820JS is crucial when making a decision, especially with how close they are in price. Even though the Sharp R 820BK is a bit more pricy than the 820JS model, I would still purchase that one because of the advanced features, which includes the 35 automatic settings to choose from.
